Privacy

The Gazette collects only the information needed to send the paper, receive reader messages, and understand which parts of the site are useful. Analytics are kept separate from subscriber and contact information.

Audience measurement

PostHog is configured in cookieless mode, with person profiles, autocapture, session replay, heatmaps, and persistent browser storage disabled. Events record only coarse facts such as the page path without its query string, reading-depth milestones, the domain of an outbound source, form outcomes, and explainer status. Archive searches record the number of characters and results, never the search terms.

The Gazette never sends PostHog an email address, name, contact message, archive term, article text, explainer response, or complete URL query string. Shared links preserve only a short allowlist of source and medium labels plus an issue date so newsletter and community visits can be counted. Click IDs and all other query parameters are discarded. PostHog's cookieless mode briefly uses the browser's user-agent string and connection IP, together with the site hostname, to produce a privacy-preserving visitor count that changes over time. It strips the raw user-agent and IP before storing the event. The Gazette does not identify readers or combine analytics with subscriber or contact records.

Email subscriptions

The active subscriber list stores an email address and signup time so the weekly edition can be delivered. It does not store an IP address or IP-derived hash, and future signups do not collect one. Every edition includes a signed one-click unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing removes the address from the active list.

Contact messages

The contact form sends the name, email address, and message to the editor through the email provider. The website does not add the message to an analytics event or save a copy in the repository. Email providers and the receiving mailbox process the message so it can be delivered and answered.
